Sequel to the Love That is Never Smooth By Anonymous Part 1 ended like this: Nadine: This is my son. His is Patrick. He is your son. PJ: WHAT!!! In the background we see Maggie's jaw drop, PJ has gone completely white he is also shocked. He turns to see Maggie standing behind him. As soon as he looks at her, she runs off quickly. -- Part 2 -- PJ turns around and calls Maggie back but she doesn't listen, she grabs her coat and runs out. PJ is flustered as he would like to go after her but can't because he's on duty and now has an urgent and pressing problem to deal with. PJ escorts Nadine through to his office and asks Dash to look after young Patrick. In the office he tells Nadine that there is no way this kid could be his son, and demands that she takes the boy for a blood test. Nadine doesn't like this idea and seems pretty shocked, she gasps, "What I've travelled all the way up here and you want me to go straight to the hospital?" She then goes on to point out that she and Patrick are tired after the travelling and need to sort out somewhere to stay, and until then she's not doing anything else. PJ is aggravated, he is sure that this kid is not his son, he wanted Patrick to have a blood test as quickly as possible to prove that Patrick isn't his son and get the whole thing over and done with. However he now has to get Nadine and Patrick booked into the Imperial before she'll go ahead with the blood test. On his way out of the Station with them Tom comes out of his office and asks where PJ is going. PJ gives him some line about following up a new lead, Tom is quite angry as PJ takes off in a hurry without explaining himself fully. At the Imperial PJ asks Chris for a room for Nadine and her boy for one night. Nadine is shocked and remarks to PJ that after all the searching she's done to find him she's gonna be staying for more than one night. At this point Chris intervenes asking if Nadine knows PJ, PJ tries to get in quick and say that they are just old friends but Nadine beats him to it and tells Chris how PJ is Patrick's father. At this Chris is shocked and PJ is annoyed, he tells her to keep quiet until it's proved. At this point Nadine runs off after Patrick who has ran out into the street. At first Chris finds it funny and starts to laugh commenting, "Well Peej never thought you'd be the fatherly type." Then her face drops and she says "What about Maggie? Have you told her?" PJ swears to her it's not his child. Chris goes on to say "She'll be devastated" (meaning Maggie). Once booked in PJ brings Nadine's bags in from the car, drops them down and asks Chris if she'll take them upstairs to Nadine's room, both Chris and Nadine are shocked as they both expected PJ to do it. He points out to them that he's very busy and needs to get back to work, and off he goes. But instead of going back to work he goes straight to his house to look for Maggie but she isn't there. PJ is even more anxious now he can't find her and explain his side of the story to her. He gets in the car and starts to drive round to see if he can see her, he is interrupted by Tom on the radio asking where he is and ordering him back to the station to interview a burglary suspect. PJ has no choice but to go back to the station. As he walks through the station door Toms leaps up out of his office shouting at him, asking what he thinks he's doing taking off without good reason and being unable to be contacted. But PJ just walks past him toward his office saying that he just had to check something out. Tom calls him back but PJ just ignores him and walks into his office. Tom returns to his office muttering "It's like trying to train a bunch of deaf puppies." In his office PJ picks up the phone and rings his house, hoping for Maggie to answer, but there is no answer and thus PJ starts getting even more agitated. Just then Dash comes in and says "PJ, David Gillespie is in the interview room for y.." "All right Dash! Give me a chance will you!" PJ shouts, stunning Dash. On his way to the interview room he has a quiet word with Nick and asks him if he'll have a look for Maggie while he's on patrol but doesn't tell him why, Nick agrees on the condition that PJ buys him a beer later on. PJ continues into the interview room and shuts the door. After a few minutes Tom, Dash and Nick hear PJ's voice raise and him shouting at the suspect. Tom enters to find PJ with his hands round the suspects throat still shouting at him, Tom tries to pull him off but can't due to PJ's shear determination so he has to call Nick to help him. Together they grab PJ and drag him out of the interview room. Tom orders PJ into his office while Dash just stands there gobsmacked. In his office Tom says to PJ, "Right, what's going on?," "I dunno what you mean boss," PJ replies. "Oh come on! all that in there, you nearly strangle a suspect, you disappear half the morning, you walk away from me when I'm talking to you. What more?" Tom shouts. PJ answers, "Just having some personal problems at the moment that's all". Tom replies, "Personal, Personal? You call that personal? When they're affecting your work and the people around you they are no longer personal. I'm giving you two choices, either get your act together or take leave. And get out of my sight before I do something I might regret". PJ goes back to his office and sits down with his head in his hands. Meanwhile at the Imperial, Nadine is talking to Chris and is telling her about the time she spent with PJ and pointing out to her similarities between Patrick and PJ. Chris doesn't know whether or not to believe it but she does see a strong resemblance. Back at the station PJ gets on the radio to Nick who is at this time mobile. He's says "Nick, you had any luck with that issue we were talking about earlier?" "No negative Mate," Nick replies. PJ goes back into his office and tries yet again to ring Maggie, but again there is no answer. PJ starts to think to himself where could Maggie go, stuck for ideas he calls in Dash and asks her if she knows of anywhere Maggie might go. Dash laughs and says "Well there's the Imperial?" "This isn't funny Dash!" PJ shouts. "Well I don't know. Sorry PJ." Dash walks out the room slightly offended with PJ's attitude and mumbles to herself "Tuh what's his problem". Residing to the fact that there is nothing more he can do PJ decides to go to the Imperial to have a chat with Nadine and to try and get her to go down to the hospital. However he soon finds out that she is reluctant to do so, she keeps going on about how much Patrick looks like his father and wouldn't it be great if he could spend some time with him. PJ didn't like this idea at all but in his own mind it seems to back up his suspicions that Patrick isn't really his son. Meanwhile Adam is on his way to work after a dental appointment when he sees Maggie's car at the side of a country road near to the river. He gets out and looks around it, at first he suspects it may have been stolen as there would be no reason for it to be out there. He calls her name but there is no answer. So rather than continue on his journey he decides to have a walk down the side of the river, after a very short while he comes across Maggie sitting next to the river with her head on her knees. "Maggie" he called, but there is no answer. Sure it is her he sits down beside her and says "Maggie what are you doing here?" She looks up at him and says "What are you doing here? Adam can now see that she has been crying. "What's wrong?"he whispers. She turns to him and says whilst still crying "Why is it that everytime I'm happy or things are going well something always has to come along and shoot it down?" "Why what's happened?" Adam asks. "Nothing, It's all right I'll be fine," Maggie replies, she gets up and starts to walk back to her car. Adam asks if she's sure she'll be all right and If she'd would like a lift anywhere. She tells him she's fine, gets in her car and drives off. Adam continues on his way to the station. When he arrives at the station Tom says in a pleased voice "Ah Junior Constable, perhaps now we'll get some work done today." "How was the dentist Adso? Grrrrrr" says Nick in a joking fashion. "What's the story with Maggie?" Adam asks Nick and Dash. "What do you mean?" asks Nick. "Well I just saw her down the river in a right state" says Adam. "Maybe that's what's up with PJ" Dash says "He's been in a foul mood all morning". Back at the Imperial PJ is having no luck in getting Nadine to go to the hospital. He's goes over to Chris and asks for a double Scotch. "What? don't be ridiculous PJ your on duty" she tells him, "Chris, just shut up and give me one" he says. "Sorry Peej but I refuse to give you anything, you're just gonna get yourself in more of a state" Chris says. At this PJ is angered, he storms out slamming the door so hard two glass panels smash. He goes back to the station where Adam asks him "PJ what's up with Maggie?" "Why? Have you seen her?" PJ eagerly asks "Well yeah she was down at the river" says Adam "What is she there now?" PJ asks "No she's gone." "Well gone where Adam?" "Well I dunno do I" Adam replies raising his voice a little. PJ picks up the nearest phone and rings home but still there is no answer from Maggie. PJ slams the phone down and shouts to Adam "Why didn't you try and stop her?" "Well I didn't think there any reason to" Adam replies. "No. No that's just it Adam, you didn't think!". By now Tom has come out of his office to see what all the noise is about. Tom taps PJ on the shoulder and says "I think we'd better have a bit of a chat don't you? Senior Detective". They both go into Toms office and PJ is forced to explain the whole event. While Tom is angry with PJ for his behaviour he sympathises with him in wanting to get it all sorted out, but points out to PJ that he can't go round taking it out on innocent work mates. Tom says he can't understand why Nadine won't let Patrick have a blood test, because if PJ really is the father the blood test will prove it for sure. Tom thinks there may be an ulterior motive for saying he's PJ's son, either so she can get back with PJ or so that young Patrick would have a father. Soon everybody in the station knows about it and PJ and Nick start running checks on Nadine and her previous husband as well as any mention of Patrick. It's now 2:45pm and Nick calls PJ over to the computer and says "Hey PJ, look at this" he reads out from the VDU "Nadine Moore, convicted in 1991 for kidnapping of a minor". "Mmmm thanks mate" PJ ponders over Nicks info. After some minutes of thought PJ instructs Dash who's not doing anything important to check out a list of all kidnapped minors in Victoria between 1991 and 1994 and to print out a list of ones which have never been found. "Yes Sir!" Dash salutes him sarcastically. PJ reports to Tom on his theory that Nadine has kidnapped a baby, moved away from Melbourne so that she's harder to find and now is saying that PJ is his father so that firstly the kid has a father and secondly it's less likely that anyone would suspect her if PJ a Police Detective is the father. Tom thinks it's a bit far fetched and urges PJ to wait for the blood test results. As PJ leaves Tom's office Dash calls him over and shows him the list she's got. "There are only three outstanding kidnapped minors from the 91-94 and strangely enough one of the kids names is Patrick" She informs him. PJ knows it isn't proof enough but has his suspicions. PJ goes to the Imperial to talk to Nadine. On his way he takes a detour past his house, he sees Maggie's car there so stops, just as Maggie comes out with a suitcase. PJ jumps out of the car and says "Hey Maggs what are you doin?" "What does it look like PJ?" she replies sternly. "Just give me a chance to explain Maggs" PJ begs. "Explain what PJ? You've got a son of nearly school age that you never knew you had? Oh come on what do take me for?" Maggie says as she starts to cry "I suppose she was just another one like me who got sick of all your other women and secret past and decided that her and the kid would be better off without you". "No Maggs, that's not it at all" PJ says and tries to hug her, but Maggie pushes him off and shouts. "Well if that's all I mean to you, you can stick it!" She takes off the engagement ring and throws it at him, she then bundles her case into the car, gets in and takes off at high speed almost hitting PJ. PJ is left standing in the street surrounded by onlookers who have witnessed the whole argument. Now more angry than ever PJ continues to the Imperial and tries to get Nadine to take Patrick for the blood test but she refuses, she says "I'm not putting my child through the ordeal of a needle". By now it has become apparent to PJ that Nadine is making it deliberately difficult for PJ to prove one way or the other that Patrick is or isn't his son, this makes PJ angry especially as his relationship with Maggie is on the line. What makes it worse is when Patrick comes in and shouts "Hello Dadda" in front of everyone in the Imperial. At this point PJ stands up, grabs Nadine and says, "Nadine Moore, I'm arresting you on suspicion of kidnapping a child" He then goes on to read her her rights. PJ knows that it is a wild shot but he is so angry he feels it's worth a try. As he drags Nadine out to the car young Patrick starts to cry and everyone in the Imperial, especially Chris are shocked with PJ's abrupt and heavy handedness. PJ takes Nadine back to the station and marches her through to the interview room, on the way Tom comes out of his office, he can't believe what PJ has done. PJ tells Dash to look after Patrick. "Great! Dash the Nanny" she says to herself. PJ starts to interview Nadine in relation to the kidnapping of Patrick Johnson in 1993 from Melbourne, expecting Nadine to know nothing about it and him having to release her shortly after. But to his surprise she broke down in tears and began to confess about how she had kidnapped Patrick at only a year old and brought him up to believe she is his mother and his father is a policeman who they can't find - until now. She goes on to tell him that the reason she decided to make up that PJ was his father was because people were starting to get suspicious and ask questions, and she thought that nobody would question her if she said PJ was the father and PJ just took her word for it. PJ is both shocked and relieved. "interview terminated 16:45" he says for the benefit of the interview tape recording. PJ rushes through to his office and once again tries to ring Maggie, still no answer. PJ has cheered up a lot as he now knows that all he has to do is find Maggie and tell her the good news. He tells Tom the result of the interview with Nadine and Tom instructs PJ to call in the duty social worker to deal with re-uniting Patrick with his proper family. It isn't until PJ does this that he realises what he has done, he's made a very happy four year old boy be torn away from the woman he loves and knows to be his mother and all the while he was only thinking about the effect on his relationship with Maggie, and now he also feels in a way quite guilty and even selfish. Whilst PJ is in his office writing up his report and trying to contact Maggie, Tom gets a phonecall from Pat Doyle (Maggie's Father) informing him that Maggie is taking one weeks sick leave. Tom is very annoyed but doesn't say anything to Pat, instead he remarks "Great! A detective who can spend a whole day doing nothing, a Junior Constable who hides out at the dentist and a Constable who calls in sick - how are we supposed to solve any crimes !" "What ? What's that ?" PJ asks anxiously. Tom says "Well that was the lovely Pat Doyle on the phone telling me that thanks to the wonderful bunch of coppers his daughter works with she'll be taking sick leave". "What ? No she can't" PJ replies. He rushes into his office and rings Pat Doyle, by now he's realised that must be where Maggie is. On the phone - "Pat, it's PJ I need to speak to Ma..." "You should be ashamed of yourself Hasham, I always knew you couldn't be trusted." Pat says. "I just need to speak to Maggie, It's not what you think" PJ tells him. "Oh isn't it? I know what it is Hasham and there's no way you're talking to my daughter!" Pat hangs up the phone. PJ sits back in his chair and after a few minutes reluctantly tries to concentrate on getting some work done. The last two hours of his shift seem to go really slow, at the end of shift he gets in his car and drives down to Pat Doyle's house hoping to see Maggie. PJ knocks on the door, Pat Doyle answers and says "What are you doing here Hasham ? I thought I told you Maggie didn't wanna see you". "I just need to talk to her that's all" says PJ. Just then Maggie comes to the door and looks over her fathers shoulder to see what's going on. On seeing her, PJ says "Maggs it's o.k. it's been sorted out" He tries to walk toward her and push past her father. But Pat grabs PJ and throws out into the garden before following him out. Pat starts shouting at him to get lost and leave Maggie alone. Again PJ tries to force his way past him, this time Pat punches PJ and jumps on top of him. Maggie comes running out shouting "dad come on get off him" she pulls him off and they start walking back toward the house leaving PJ on the grass. When Pat enters the house Maggie walks up to PJ who is still on the floor holding his mouth and shouts, "I hate you PJ! I hate you! I never wanna see you again! So you keep away from me and my family! Oh and don't expect to see me back at work, I'm getting a transfer!" PJ drags himself up off the floor, gets into his car and makes his way back to Mount Thomas. PJ goes to the Imperial, walks straight past Tom who's standing at the counter, sits down and asks Chris for a Double Whiskey. Nick walks over to him and says, "What happened to you mate?" "Oh er, walked into a door" PJ answers "Pretty violent door by the looks of it" Adam adds. "I hope you haven't been causing any trouble Senior Detective" says Tom. Nick & Adam both start to question PJ about his injuries trying to find out what happened. PJ gulps back his whiskey stands up and says, "What does a man have to do for some peace around here?" and storms out. It isn't till later that night that Chris tells Tom what PJ had done to the door. The next morning at the station. Nick, Adam and Dash are sitting round talking, Tom comes out of his office and inquires, "What's become of PJ?" "dunno Boss, he was supposed to be here two hours ago" says Adam, "Well when he does decide to turn up send him into my office. And get off your backsides and do some work!" Ten minutes later PJ strolls in clearly showing the effects of his injuries and a heavy night of drinking. Nick informs him that Tom wishes to see him so PJ goes into Toms office. Tom says "Just look at the state of you!" PJ just stands there. "I suppose it's too much to ask what happened to you last night ?" again PJ just stands there silent. "This can't go on PJ, Chris told me what you did to her door, that's criminal damage PJ! We're supposed to set an example!" at this PJ replies "Boss, it was an accident". "Accident my foot, there's been too many accidents round here lately. Sorry PJ I've no choice, You can either take two weeks paid leave or be suspended without pay. It looks to me as though you need a good holiday." says Tom. PJ very reluctantly agrees to take two weeks leave, and starts collecting his things. A short while after PJ leaves the station Maggie phones asking to speak to Dash. Maggie asks her if PJ is all right, Dash says "yeah he's fine but he looks like is been in a fight or something, do you know anything about it?" Maggie changes the subject and says she has to go. On reflection of the incident the previous night Maggie feels she may have been a bit hard on PJ, after all he had travelled all that way to see her. The day passes and at night everyone goes to the Imperial, they all expect PJ to be there as he wasn't planning to go away anywhere for his leave, but there is no sign of him. The next day there is still no sign of PJ, after work Nick decides to call round to PJ's house and see if he wants to go for a drink. He finds the door is wide open and there is no answer, so he goes in and finds the house is in a real mess and sitting slumped against the wall is a very drunk PJ. Nick decides to clean up PJ's house for him and stay the night to make sure PJ doesn't have anything more to drink. Nick is worried, he's never seen PJ like this before and he knows that the only person who can do anything about it is Maggie. Next day at the station Nick decides to try and get Dash to speak to Maggie to try and get her to come and sort PJ out. Dash says "O.K, but why me? Why can't you do it? It's your bright idea." Nick simply tells her that it'd be better coming from a woman. Dash agrees, she's rings Maggie who is by now feeling even more guilty about the way she has treated PJ. Dash arranges to meet up with Maggie after work. They meet up and go for a friendly drink at a pub on the outskirts of the town. Maggie says, "So Dash, what's this all about then?" acting as though she's not feeling a bit guilty and doesn't really care much. Dash says, "well I thought maybe I could tell about that young boy, Patrick. He wasn't really PJ's son" "oh yeah, that's nice" says Maggie pretending she doesn't care. Dash then goes on to say "But the thing is Maggie, the main reason why I'm here is PJ. You've gotta speak to him and sort this out he's in a riot state, he'll loose his career and everything" Maggie starts to get concerned and her guilt starts to get at her. After a while Maggie agrees with Dash to go round and try and sort it out with PJ. They leave the pub and Maggie goes round to PJ's house. When Maggie gets to PJ's there is no answer and the place is in darkness. At first Maggie thinks he may have gone to the pub, she fumbles around in her handbag to get out the key for the front door. She enters to find PJ unconscious on the bed with an empty Vodka bottle on his chest. Maggie panics and says to herself "Oh god no". She runs around frantically to ring for an ambulance before trying to revive PJ, but it's no use he's out cold. The ambulance arrives and Maggie goes in it to the hospital with him. At the hospital he is rushed into the Emergency department and Maggie is told to wait outside. Maggie, now very worried decides to phone Dash and Tom to let them know what's happened. Before either Tom or Dash arrive Dr.Hamilton tells Maggie that PJ's is suffering from alcohol intoxication, they have pumped his stomach and his condition is now stable although he is still unconscious. "Can I see him?" Maggie asks, Zoe replies "Yes, but only for a short while". Maggie goes into the room PJ is in and sits down beside him, she can't stop shaking, she starts to wish to herself that she had of let him talk to her when he wanted to instead of pushing him away. Maggie holds PJ's right hand which is still quite cold and starts crying. She says "Oh PJ I'm so so sorry, It's my fault it's all my fault, I should have trusted you more, I now you'd never do anything to hurt me and I don't know why I acted like this. Please wake up PJ, please. I love you." Maggie can't take anymore and has to get out of there. By now Nick and Dash have arrived to see PJ. "How is he?" Dash asks Maggie, wiping her eyes Maggie doesn't have chance to answer before Nick, who is very angry says, "Well Margaret, I hope you're pleased with yourself? You couldn't even give him the time of day could you? You had to go running off to daddy telling all about how bad PJ is when you hadn't even given him chance to explain himself to you!" "Nick, Stop it" Dash interrupts. Maggie bursts into tears after Nick has a go at her, Dash hugs Maggie and says, "It'll be all right Maggie, It'll be all right". Then Dr.Hamilton comes down the corridor and they can see by the look on her face that it's not good news. "Well is he gonna be all right?" Maggie asks anxiously. "It's not looking good I'm afraid" Dr.Hamilton replies "You see he went quite a while without breathing, this may have caused a lack of oxygen to the brain, and we don't know whether it's caused any lasting damage or not". "What he could be brain damaged?" Maggie cries out whilst still crying. "We wont be able to tell just yet" says Dr.Hamilton. By now Tom has arrived and Nick is filling him in on the situation. Dr.Hamilton allows only one visitor into PJ's room at a time, so Maggie goes in first, she sits holding PJ's hand and crying hoping for him to wake up knowing the odds are against it. Tom and Dash go off to get a drink, leaving Nick nodding off in the corridor, Zoe Hamilton comes along and says, "Dreaming Senior Constable?" Nick suddenly awakes and says " Er, no, no. It was more of a nightmare really." "Oh really" says Zoe. "Yeah I thought I was getting eaten alive by a giant pihrana" replies Nick, "oh" says Zoe and walks off. Over the next two weeks there is no change in PJ's condition, Maggie stays at the hospital almost constantly. The others visit occasionally and Dash visits regularly, mainly as support for Maggie. One day when Maggie goes home to get some rest Dash goes into PJ's room, she sits down and starts talking to him, she doesn't believe he can hear her so she just says what comes to mind, "Hi PJ, you lucky thing, do you know I've had the worst morning, first I had to help clean up an overturned manure truck on the Widgeri Road, then I had to put up with Adams aggravating jokes and Tom's stupid bossy orders and this is about the best part of my day". She pauses briefly and then continues, "You know I've always been jealous of Maggie, I've always not wanted her to have you, but now I just wish she could" She stops speaking and looks out of the window. Just then PJ groans and his eyelids flicker, Dash jumps up, her heartbeat racing. She's runs down the corridor looking for Zoe and tells her what's happened. While Dr.Hamilton checks out PJ's condition Dash phones Maggie who rushes down to the hospital. On arriving Maggie meets Dr.Hamilton and asks her, "Well how is he?" "As far as we can tell he's fine Maggie, there doesn't seem to be any lasting effects like memory loss or anything, however we can't be sure until we've done some more tests". Maggie goes into PJ's room grabs his hand and sits down, "Oh PJ I'm so sorry" she says. "I know, I heard you before" PJ replies. "For a moment there I thought I'd lost you" Maggie weeps to him. "No sorry Maggs, It'll take more than that to get rid of me" comments PJ. Maggie then goes on to give PJ a full apology for her behaviour. After spending an hour with him Maggie comes out of PJ's room to ring her father to tell him the good news, even though Pat still has reservations about PJ. While she gone Dash goes in and says, "Welcome back PJ. Glad you could re-join us" "What for Maggie's sake?" answers PJ smiling. Dash instantly realises that he could hear everything she was saying to him, she feels very embarrassed and walks out red faced leaving PJ smirking. Maggie returns to PJ's room and sits down. PJ asks, "So Maggs, are we still on for getting married?" "Ah well there's only one problem there" replies Maggie, PJ's face drops as he says, "What's that?" And Maggie replies smiling, "Will it be an autumn wedding or a winter wedding?" They both smile happy that everything has turned out o.k and that they are on course for a great future.
