LISTEN TO THE WORDS By Sarah Partridge. This story is set after 'Gold' and 'Fools Gold' but before 'Possession'!! "Good morning," said the blonde constable Maggie Doyle as she walked into the station. "Umm, yeah hi," said the rest of the constables. "Good morning Miss Margaret," said PJ walking out of his office. "You see that Cooper?" said Nick. "PJ here has been moody all morning until Maggs showed up." "Yeah, you know I think there might be something they want to tell us," said Cooper looking at them. "Yeah like what?" said PJ in his moody voice again. "Ooh, maybe, ah...." "Just give up will you Adam," added Dash. After another five minutes of bickering Tom came out of his office yelling "Oy, you lot settle down will you. And Cooper get on the blower and tell Miss Carson that her car has been found. Ah but before you do that, I have just been informed, by Chris, that there is a ball on in the community hall in two days time, and we want you lot to make an off duty appearance, so I expect to see you all there." Another five minutes passed and PJ asked Maggie into his office. As soon as she had closed the door behind her, he started talking. "Now Maggs, I know we agreed that we won't have a relationship but I was wondering if you would like to accompany me to the ball?" "PJ, I don't know, I mean I want to, but..." "Come on Maggs I just want to go with you, no strings attached." "Ok, but remember we're just friends." "Always Maggs." That afternoon after collecting the lunches Maggie sat down at her desk with her sand-which to do some paper work and found a small note on the top of her file saying, "Listen to the Words - PJx." She looked at he note with a confused look on her face, and decided to ask him about it later. After a quiet day of paper work her knock off time had finally come, so Maggie went to her locker, and stuck to it was another note saying, "Listen to the words, - PJx". This time she went to see him. "Ok, quit playing games what is this supposed to mean?" she asked walking in to the C.I office. "Ah, ha, that Miss Doyle is for me to know and for you to find out," he replied cheekily. "Come on out with it, what is it supposed to mean?" "Sorry Maggs, you're just going to have to wait and find out." "Ok, if that's the way you want to play. I'm knocking of now, so I'll see you at the pub," she said walking out. "Bye," he replied. Once they were all at the pub, they all started discussing who they were going with, and as soon as Chris, Dash and Maggie started talking about what they were wearing the guys were off to play darts. The next day was another slow one for the crime rate in Mt Thomas, and by lunch time Maggie had found another three notes from PJ saying exactly the same as the other two. Just after she finished her lunch, the phone in the main part of the station rang and both Adam and Nick ran to get it, and Adam won. "Hello Mt Thomas Police Constable Adam Cooper speaking." "Hello I was wondering if I could speak to Constable Doyle," said the strange sleazy voice. "Maggs, some weird gut on line two for you," he called to Maggie who was in the kitchen. "Hello, Constable Maggie Doyle speaking," she said taking the phone from Adam. "G'day Maggs, Guess who?" "PJ why are you ringing me when we are both in the station?" "To tell you just one thing, "Listen to the words, Maggs." As soon as he had said it the phone cut off and se put the phone back into it's cradle, and totally ignored PJ, because he was annoying her so much. The next night was the ball, and PJ rocked up to Maggie's house at exactly 7 o'clock. "Wow Maggs, don't we look sensational," he enthused as she opened the door. "I'm still not talking to you," she replied. "Sorry Maggs, but I'm afraid you just did!" Once at the ball they and all the others drank and danced and danced and drank. Then as Maggie went to the ladies room PJ went and talked to the band members. When she came back she sat down at their table only to hear an announcement addressed to her. As she looked up she saw PJ standing in front of her and the leader of the band saying that this song was dedicated to Maggie Doyle with love forever from PJ Hasham. He held out his hand in front of hers as if to ask her to dance so as she slipped her hand into his and stood up. As the got closer and started to dance PJ whispered "Listen o the words Maggs, listen to the words." The words of the song started and as they danced she listened carefully: There was a time where I was everything and nothing all in one, When you found me, I was feeling like a cloud across the sun. I need to tell you how you light up every second of the day, But in the moonlight, you shine like a beacon on the bay. And I can't explain, it's something about the way you look tonight, Takes my breath away, it's that feeling I get about you deep inside. And I can't describe, but it's something about the way you look tonight, Takes my breath away, the way you look tonight. With that smile, you pull the deepest secrets from my heart, In all honesty I'm speechless, and I don't know where to start. And I can't explain, it's something about the way you look tonight, Oh, it takes my breath away; it's that feeling I get about you deep inside. And I can't describe, but it's something about the way you look tonight, Takes my breath away, the way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you look tonight The way you loooooooooooook tonight! The song stopped and Maggie and PJ were still dancing and all the heelers, Chris and Zoë were still as they were all the way through the song. They pulled apart and PJ said "Sorry Maggs, I know you don't want a relationship, but I had to let you know how I feel." As he turned to walk away she grabbed his arm and said "well, it must be something about the way you look tonight, because that suit is basically the same as everyone else's, but on you it looks so sexy." With that she started to passionately kiss him, and the rest of the heelers just stood shell-shocked. Then the music started again and PJ and Maggie started to dance, as did everyone else. That night Dash and Maggie were sitting on the couch discussing guys and imparticular PJ. "So how long have you liked him?" asked Dash. "A long four years," replied Maggie. "What four years, and you've never done anything about it?" "I was too scared that we'd get separated and I'd never see him again." "Well, you've got him now, and I'd never let go if I were you." "Trust me Dash, after being madly in love with one guy for four years, and finally getting him, there's nothing I the world that can stop me now!" *** "Put the gun down," yelled PJ at the drunken David Jones outside the Imperial who was waving around a sawn off shotgun for no apparent reason. PJ continued to yell at David to put the gin down and just as he was about to release it Nick and Adam came speeding in to the car park and Nick jumped out of the car yelling at him to put the gun down. In the shock of seeing more police David accidentally fired the gun shooting PJ in the chest. Seeing PJ on the ground he dropped the gun and started screaming, "No, no, I didn't mean to, I didn't mean to kill anyone." About ten seconds later Dash and Maggie drove in to the car park. The second Maggie saw PJ down she ran across to him yelling at him to breathe. In tears she held his limp body up to hers and started screaming. Dash approached her and tried to comfort her and explained what had happened. With blood all over her hands she placed him back down and turned to see Nick. "You, You bastard!" she yelled heading straight for him. "You killed him, if you didn't yell, the gun wouldn't have been fired, it's all your fault, I hate you!" She started slamming her fists against is chest and started kicking him to which he acted as if she wasn't even there. But he heard everything she was saying. As she broke down into tears in PJ's arms, he did too. As he looked at PJ he realised his best mate had just died and it was his entire fault. He and Maggie cried as the ambulance came to take him away, and Maggie let go of Nick to go and say goodbye to PJ. Leaning over him and crying her eyes out she told him how much she loved him. Each time the ambo's went to take him away, she wouldn't let them. She continued to cry until Dash approached her and pulled her away. Screaming as she saw them taking him away she turned to Dash and hugged her and the both cried for what seemed like hours before getting in the car to return to the station. Once there Maggie walked into the C.I office where she sat in PJ's chair and looked around, as she cried she could smell his strong masculine odor from is after-shave that she loved so much. And she looked at all his possessions tucked away so neatly. As she turned she saw a photo of him on the wall that she took down and hugged, as she sat and cried. Tom arrived at the door with Dash in toe to take her home. Over the next few days Maggie ate close to nothing and spoke not one word to anyone until it came to the funeral. Sitting down the front next to his mum. Maggie continued to cry until it was her turn to speak. She got up the front and said, "PJ was the most loving and gentle man I have ever known or care to know. He touched all our lives in many different ways, which I'm sure no one will forget." As she spoke, she cried and shook. "He said something to me that I know I'll never forget, he told me to listen to listen to the words, not only to the words of the song, but to the words of life. So I wrote a poem of my love for PJ, that I have felt ever since I met him, so please listen to the words: Everything about you used to make me smile, The way you'd look at me or listen for a while, Everything about you so gentle calm and sure, Life gave the twinkle in your eyes, This meant our love was pure. Everything about you no detail I'll forget, From the day your eyes shattered mine my goal in life was set. Everything about you I'll remember to this day, Especially how you loved me before you passed away. Take PJ's advice, listen to the words of life, and always pay attention to what you want, and don't let anything stand in your way, like I foolishly did. And PJ, where ever you are I love you more than life itself." With that she broke into tears and their song, 'Something about the way you look tonight,' was played which made her cry even harder. But as she placed the flowers on his grave, she thought about how she was so lucky to have known some one so special and how he had affected her life in a way she'd never forget! The End!
